How Long Countertop Installation Takes

How long does countertop installation take? The installation itself usually takes one day for a typical kitchen, often about four to eight hours including removal of the old tops. The whole project, from choosing a slab to finished countertops, commonly runs from about one to three weeks across the industry, and most of that time is fabrication in the shop.

How Long Does It Take to Install Quartz Countertops on the Day?

For a standard kitchen, crews typically finish in one visit. A rough breakdown:

• Setup and protection: under an hour
• Removing old countertops: commonly one to three hours, longer for tile on a mortar bed
• Leveling, setting and seaming: commonly two to four hours
• Sink, caulk and cleanup: an hour or so

A bathroom vanity is often done in an hour or two. A large kitchen with an island, a waterfall end and a full-height backsplash can run to a full day or spill into a second visit. Our installation day guide walks through each step.

How Long After Templating Are Countertops Installed?

This is the stretch homeowners ask about most. After templating, the fabricator lays out the pieces on your slab, cuts them, makes the cutouts, profiles and polishes the edges and checks the work. Across the industry, installation commonly follows templating by about one to two weeks, and sometimes three.

What moves it:

• Slab availability. If your color is in stock at the distributor, it can move quickly. A special-order color can add weeks.
• Layout approval. On veined colors, many fabricators send a digital layout for your sign-off before cutting. A quick reply keeps the job moving.
• Complexity. Mitered edges, waterfall panels and many cutouts take more shop time.
• Shop workload. Busy seasons fill schedules everywhere.

How Long Will I Be Without a Kitchen?

Less time than most people expect. When old tops are removed and new ones installed the same day, the kitchen is typically out of service for that day only. Plan for:

• No sink for about a day. Silicone under an undermount sink commonly needs around 24 hours before the sink is used or plumbing is reconnected.
• A cooktop reconnect. Gas and hardwired cooktops need a licensed professional, which may be the next day.
• Backsplash work afterward. A new tile backsplash goes in after the countertops, which adds days if it is part of the project.

What Makes Countertop Installation Take Longer

Most delays come from things outside the shop. The common ones:

1. Cabinets not ready at templating. Templates are taken on installed, level cabinets. If the cabinets are still going in, templating waits.
2. Sink or faucet not chosen. The cutout is sized to the exact model, so the fabricator needs it (or its spec sheet) at templating.
3. Changes after templating. Moving the sink or changing the edge after the template can mean re-measuring or re-cutting.
4. Condo approvals. Many associations require insurance certificates, elevator reservations and set work hours. Build in time for paperwork. See our condo countertop installation guide.
5. Weather. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. A storm can close roads and postpone deliveries across West Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade for days.

How Long Countertop Installation Takes by Project Type

Project size changes the day more than it changes the overall schedule. Typical industry ranges:

• Single bathroom vanity: often an hour or two on site, since it is usually one piece with one or two sink cutouts. See our bathroom vanity countertops page.
• Island only: commonly a few hours. A seamless island goes quickly; a seamed or waterfall island takes longer to align.
• Full kitchen replacement: usually one day, including removal of the old tops.
• Kitchen with full-height backsplash or waterfall ends: can run a full day or need a second visit for the vertical pieces.
• Outdoor kitchen: depends on the structure being finished and on weather, since the work is outside.

Shop time scales the same way. Each extra piece, cutout, miter or vein-matched seam adds fabrication work, which is why a large, detailed kitchen tends to sit toward the longer end of the one-to-two-week fabrication range.

How Long Does It Take to Replace Countertops Compared With New Construction?

A replacement adds removal to installation day, and sometimes surprises underneath, but the old tops stay in use while the new ones are fabricated. In new construction or a full remodel, countertops are one step in a longer sequence: cabinets must be set and leveled first, and the backsplash, plumbing trim and appliances follow.
