Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about choosing the right countertop material.

Quartzite and quartz are the most durable options. Quartzite is a natural stone that rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale with superior heat resistance. Engineered quartz also rates 7 and provides excellent scratch and stain resistance. Both are ideal for high-traffic South Florida kitchens.

Engineered quartz requires the least maintenance. It never needs sealing, is non-porous (resisting stains and bacteria), and only requires cleaning with mild soap and water. Natural stones like granite, marble, and quartzite require periodic sealing.

Quartz is engineered from ground quartz crystals mixed with resins, offering non-porous surfaces and consistent patterns. Quartzite is natural metamorphic stone with unique veining similar to marble. Quartzite offers better heat resistance, while quartz requires less maintenance.

Costs vary by material: Granite $40-$100/sq ft, Quartz $50-$150/sq ft, Quartzite $70-$200/sq ft, Marble $75-$250/sq ft, and Semi-Precious Stone $150-$500+/sq ft installed. Final pricing depends on slab selection, edge profiles, and project complexity.

Granite is the best choice for outdoor kitchens due to its excellent UV resistance, heat tolerance, and durability in humid conditions. Quartzite also works well in covered outdoor spaces. Standard quartz should be avoided outdoors as UV exposure can cause discoloration.

Granite and quartzite have excellent heat resistance and can typically handle hot pans, though trivets are recommended. Quartz can be damaged by extreme heat and always requires trivets. Marble is sensitive to heat. For all materials, trivets protect your investment.
