Is MSI Quartz Good? What a Fabricator Looks At

Is MSI quartz good? For most homes, yes. MSI Q is a nonporous engineered surface that needs no sealing, carries NSF food-safety certification and has a limited lifetime residential warranty. It is not the right fit for every project, though: the warranty does not transfer, it excludes rentals, and because MSI sources Q from many suppliers, each color is worth judging on its own.

What Is MSI Quartz?

MSI, short for M S International, is a national supplier of surfaces based in Orange, California. It sells flooring, tile, natural stone and sinks as well as countertops. Q is its engineered quartz countertop line.

MSI describes Q as an engineered surface made from minerals, glass and resin, designed to look like quartzite, marble, granite, concrete or limestone. It lists more than 100 current colors, most in 2 cm and 3 cm slabs, with select colors in 1.5 cm. MSI also sells prefabricated Q countertops, which are different from full slabs cut to your layout.

Specialty groups inside Q include:

• Q Studio Collection: made in the USA with US and imported materials, using a patented veining process.
• LumaLuxe: an MSI-exclusive formulation meant to change how light plays across the surface.
• Q+: colors printed with high-definition inkjet technology for detailed stone patterns.

Where Is MSI Quartz Made?

MSI says it sources Q colors from more than 25 suppliers worldwide, and that some colors are made at its own 360,000-square-foot plant in Latta, South Carolina. The Q Studio Collection is the domestically made group.

That sourcing model is the key thing to understand about MSI. Different colors can come from different factories, so we judge MSI color by color rather than as a single product. Look at a full slab of the exact color, not only a small sample, before you commit.

MSI Quartz Pros

• Low maintenance: MSI says Q needs no sealing, polishing or reconditioning, and cleans with warm water and a mild detergent.
• Food safe: MSI lists NSF/ANSI 51 certification, plus GREENGUARD and Kosher certifications.
• Hardness: MSI rates Q at 7 to 8 on the Mohs scale, compared with 3 to 5 for marble.
• Range and budget options: MSI ranks its colors in low, mid and high cost tiers, so there is usually a marble look that fits a tighter budget.
• Availability: MSI sells through a large network of dealers and fabricators, so popular colors are often easy to source.

MSI Quartz Cons and Limits

• Warranty does not transfer: the residential warranty is limited to the original purchaser.
• Rentals are excluded from the residential warranty and fall under a 10-year commercial warranty.
• Heat: MSI says Q can withstand about 300°F without scorching, but that high heat can affect the resin and cause discoloration. Use trivets.
• Many sources: with Q colors coming from more than 25 suppliers, judge each color on its own and look at the full slab before you choose.

MSI Quartz Warranty

MSI backs Q with a Residential Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects when an authorized Q fabricator fabricates and installs it in a private single-family residence. You must register within 30 days of installation and request service within 30 days of a failure.

The warranty excludes homes where the owner does not live, rental properties, outdoor installs, heat damage and thermal shock, impact chips, scratches and seam performance. Business and rental installs fall under MSI's 10-year commercial warranty, which is not transferable and excludes honed finishes. How to Shop for MSI Quartz

A few checks make an MSI purchase go smoothly:

1. Pick from full slabs, or ask for photos of the actual slabs reserved for your job, especially for veined colors.
2. Confirm the collection. Q Studio, LumaLuxe and Q+ colors differ in how they are made, so know which one you are buying.
3. Ask about thickness. Most colors come in 2 cm and 3 cm, and a few in 1.5 cm, which can suit vanities and overlays.
4. Check the finish. Honed and textured finishes show oils differently, and MSI's commercial warranty excludes honed finishes.
5. Ask whether your fabricator is an authorized Q fabricator, since the residential warranty requires it.
6. Register within 30 days of installation and keep the paid invoice.

MSI vs Premium Brands

Compared with Cambria, Silestone or Caesarstone, MSI's advantage is range and budget flexibility. Where it trails is warranty terms: Cambria's lifetime warranty transfers automatically to a new owner and Silestone's 25-year term is transferable, while MSI's does not transfer at all. If you plan to sell within a few years and want the warranty to count as a selling point, that matters.

When MSI Quartz Is a Good Choice in South Florida

MSI Q works well for a primary home you plan to keep, for guest baths, laundry rooms and secondary spaces, and for projects where the budget has to stretch across several rooms. For seasonal rentals and investment condos in Miami or Pompano Beach, go in knowing the commercial warranty applies instead of the residential one. For outdoor kitchens, choose a product sold for outdoor use; MSI excludes outdoor installs.
